July 7th - The Bull Run - Birmingham Business communities answer to the frivolity of our Spanish friends. Download more information on the Bull Run, Birmingham (PDF) Streets in the heart of Birmingham’s business district will come alive with the sound of well-shod hooves next week as some of the city’s leading businessmen take part in the inaugural Bull Run. Coinciding with the start of the San Fermin festival in Spain and, specifically, the world-renowned running of the bulls in Pamplona, Bull Run Numero Uno will see some of the city’s movers and shakers embark on a potentially treacherous pub crawl. All in the name of charity! The intrepid "runners" will be corralled at St Paul's Club in the Jewellery Quarter before being let loose to visit watering holes at various points en route to the Grosvenor Casino on Broad Street in a bid to raise as much money as possible for The Edwards Trust and Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer. The Bull Run was the brainchild Bart Dalton, a financial advisor at Edward Jones, who said: "We just thought this would be a great way of combining what appears to be a great British tradition of the pub crawl with fundraising and a bit of business networking." "The San Fermin festival starts on Monday at midnight with the running of the bulls starting on Tuesday and we thought this was a great way to forget all about the credit crunch and the doom and gloom and have a bit of fun."
"With Birmingham’s famous Bull Ring on our doorsteps the link with Pamplona was obvious. It is, if you like, a bull market for the day! Fortunately, there will be very little running involved." Each "runner" will receive a free drink at each location on the route which will take them from St Paul's Square, to the Metro Bar & Grill, in Cornwall Street, then to The Birmingham Rep, in Centenary Square and on to Broad Street followed by a meal at the Grosvenor Casino. Raffles and prize draws will be held throughout the event. "It is two very worthy causes," added Mr Dalton, who heads business network group The Mercantile Club whose members are supporting the festivities." The Edwards Trust is a local charity that has offered fantastic support to some of our friends and clients. "And my assistant Debbie Carpenter has survived breast cancer so the money we raise on behalf of Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer will go to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital." Any businessmen or women who wish to join the herd – dress is smart casual and each participant will be issued with a red T-shirt at the start of the run – can contact Bart Dalton on 0121 427 7990.
